Performing Cold Socketing - using WIRELOCK
Article last updated on 25 July 2023
Cold socketing is a method of attaching wire ropes to sockets without using heat or molten metal; involving filling the socket with a resin compound, such as Wirelock, that hardens and bonds the rope to the socket.
Cold socketing has several advantages over hot socketing, such as:
- Faster and easier to perform, requiring less equipment and skills.
- Safer and more environmentally friendly, avoiding the hazards of molten metal and fumes.
- Better corrosion resistance and fatigue strength, as the resin protects the rope from moisture and stress
On top of the above advantages, looking at wire rope termination efficiency, socketing with resin is one of the few methods that could help achieve 100% termination efficiency / loading efficiency.
At Sing Teck Leong (STL), WIRELOCK® solution has been our preferred method in Cold Socketing of Steel Wire Ropes, in view of its safety, dependability & excellent fatigue performance! Today, let us go through the steps briefly in the 2-parts pictorial from the socketing process performed in-house below...
PART 1. PREPARATION PHASE
Involving (i) thorough cleaning of the fully broomed wire rope & the socket to be installed; (ii) setting up of socket for WIRELOCK compound filling.
PART 2. WIRELOCK SOCKETING PROCESS
Involving (i) mixing of the WIRELOCK resin & powder compound; (ii) filling up the socket & curing
