FAQ - Rescue Tripod with Winch
A rescue tripod with a winch is a portable anchorage system designed specifically for confined space access, retrieval, and fall protection. It is used in environments such as manholes, tanks, pits, and silos where a vertical entry or exit is required.
The system serves three primary functions:
- Controlled Entry & Exit: Safely lowering or lifting personnel and equipment into deep spaces.
- Fall Arrest: Acting as a stable overhead anchor point for a Self Retracting Lifeline (SRL).
- Emergency Retrieval: In the event of an accident or medical emergency, the winch allows an operator above ground to quickly and safely hoist a worker to the surface
When selecting a rescue tripod for personnel lifting, the orientation of the winch is an important safety factor.
The Risk of Inward-Facing Winches: Traditional tripods often mount the winch facing inward. During an emergency rescue or routine lifting, the winch handle and the cable are positioned directly over the entry point. This creates a high risk of the equipment or the operator's movements causing unintentional injury to the person being hoisted.

Fall arrester (SRL)
An EN360 fall arrester is a Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL) designed to arrest a fall by automatically retracting and locking when sudden movement occurs.
In Singapore, EN360-rated SRLs are commonly used for working-at-heights applications in construction and industrial environments. Always select the correct SRL type, length, and anchorage method for your site risk assessment and manufacturer guidance. In addition, note that while EN360 certification demonstrates product quality, you still need MOM (Ministry of Manpower) approval for use on construction sites.

WIRE ROPE SRLs best for:
- Outdoor/harsh environments
- Hot work areas
- Longer distances (up to 30m)
- Heavy industrial use
Advantages:
- More durable - handles abrasion better
- Heat resistant - won't melt from sparks
- Longer lengths available (up to 30m)
Disadvantages:
- Heavier (10-15kg for 15m)
- Can cause injury if it retracts quickly
- More expensive

WEBBING SRLs Best For:
- Indoor/clean environments
- Scaffolding work
- Short to medium distances (1.5-10m)
- Workers who move frequently
Advantages:
- Lightweight - lighter than wirerope type
- Safer retraction - soft material
- More economical (less pricey than wirerope type)
- Compact storage, and quieter operation
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for welding areas
- Degrades with UV exposure
- Can absorb chemicals/moisture
- Limited to 10m typically
