NDT - Magnetic Particle Inspection
WHAT IS MPI ?
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is a type of Non-Destructive Test (NDT) method used to detect surface and slightly subsurface flaws in ferromagnetic materials, so as to prevent the consequence of accidents and equipment failures if being used, that could have substantial negative impact on productivity, cost and most importantly a Safety concern.
This method is commonly used in the industry for inspection on welds and structural materials, due to its efficiency - the ability to provide rapid inspection with immediate results, and also it's capability to perform inspection with mobility at relatively low costing (using the portable inspection tools).
HOWS IT'S PERFORMED HERE?
- Pre-Test Cleaning
- Apply background contrast paint
- Magnetization (Handheld Yoke)
- Apply magnetic particle powders/ inks
- Inspection of surfaces for indications of flaws (cracks)
- Record and Report Findings
Check out the below pictures on performing the MPI (magnetic particle inspection) by team.
- Application of background contrast (white) paint
Below pictures shows the magnetization using the Yoke and inspecting the material while applying the magnetic powder
